You Are Planning To Go To Santorini. You Don’t Have to Do Everything.

You Are Planning To Go To Santorini. You Don’t Have to Do Everything.

By the third saved sunset location, things have become suspicious. There is, presumably, still only one sun.

But Santorini does this to people. Perfectly reasonable adults begin comparing viewpoints with the seriousness usually reserved for buying property. Dinner requires research. A walk requires a strategy. Somewhere in your phone, a stranger with excellent cheekbones is explaining the five things you absolutely cannot miss.

You could put the phone down.

Outside, an island is going about its business. Wine is being poured. Someone is bringing bread. The light has reached a wall that apparently nobody thought to geotag. Your Santorini holiday has begun, and already it is offering something considerably more interesting than the schedule.

Santorini, With a Little Less Homework

Of course you want to see it. The caldera, Oia, the extraordinary arrangement of white buildings above that blue. There would be something faintly absurd about travelling here and pretending the famous parts held no appeal.

Go. Look properly. Take the photograph.

Then consider what you actually feel like doing next, a question that gets surprisingly little attention when planning a trip to Santorini. Perhaps you want lunch. Perhaps the person you came with has finally stopped talking about work. This seems worth encouraging.

A good Santorini itinerary can accommodate such developments. Book the things you care about, especially anything requiring a reservation, and leave some hours unclaimed. An afternoon needs very little justification beyond your willingness to enjoy it.

The adaptable holiday, planned-ish, if you like, asks for a certain confidence. You have to believe your own appetite deserves as much authority as a travel guide. Hungry? Eat. Curious? Follow the lane. Delighted with your current position beside a swimming pool? Stay there.

A Different Address Near Oia

Where you sleep has consequences for how you spend the day. Choose accommodation that makes you want to linger and suddenly breakfast becomes a perfectly respectable opening act.

For anyone considering where to stay in Santorini, Finikia introduces a different scale. Here are pedestrian lanes, Cycladic buildings and the pleasures of a village you can explore on foot. Oia remains nearby, available for an outing rather than compulsory as your permanent backdrop.

This is the setting for Neema Maison Santorini, an adults-only boutique hotel in the Domes Finds collection. There is an intimacy to the proposition: a village address, a distinctive point of view, somewhere to return to before you have exhausted yourself.

The interiors have their own appetites. Fashion enters through the dressing-room references, the mirrors, the draped textiles, the sense that getting ready might be an enjoyable occupation in itself. Cave suites and sea-facing rooms give the architecture different expressions; selected accommodation includes kitchens, lofts or indoor Jacuzzis.

You might find yourself taking longer over an outfit. You might wear the same thing again because it feels wonderful. Both seem entirely appropriate here.

Staying In Has Its Merits

Back at Neema Maison, there is the pool. A simple fact, with potentially extensive consequences for tomorrow’s plans.

Antonino’s brings open-air Italian dining poolside; Neema Boutique offers resortwear by Greek and international designers. A swim, a little browsing, dinner within easy reach. You can see how an afternoon might get pleasantly out of hand.

And when you want the Santorini sunset, the hotel offers access to Helestia’s caldera experience, with complimentary shuttle transfers and a reserved spot for drinks or dining. The occasion comes with somewhere to sit. Civilisation.

For a romantic Santorini holiday, these arrangements leave room for the person beside you. For everyone else, they leave room for yourself.

Eventually, somebody will ask whether you did everything.

You can tell them about the wine, the room, the dinner that ran late. About Finikia and the afternoon you went nowhere. You were in Santorini. You were having a very good time.

Words have many different meanings. So does the Domes experience.
