Letting Corfu Teach Us All About Staying Royal While Travelling
When you travel here, you travel in France, Italy, Greece, all at the same time. The influences have painted every cobblestone street, every sepia filter wall and each fragrant garden. Corfu, Kerkira in Greek, is without a doubt the most naturally royal and elegant manifestation of the Greek spirit, and of its marriage to a few more.
It’s an amazing thing, that could be easier to understand if you know people that are Corfiots. This land makes you walk differently, with a slightly better posture, and will naturally make you stare at your closet five minutes more before you pick your outfit. And as for the staring part of the narrative, get ready to observe, analyze and admire so many different sceneries that amaze both through their simplicity, as well as their refinement. The word “royal” here stands for more attention, more aesthetic pleasure and a deeper sense of sophistication. In motion, stillness, what is and what was.
The most efficient way in which we can communicate the uniqueness and grace of this island, is to bring up Empress Elisabeth of Austria, widely known as Sisi. Why would such an aesthetically conscious figure choose this place as her sanctuary? Not just as her shelter, but as an ode to Greek culture and history too. Her palace, the Achilleion, has become a jewel that lived through the years and represents the many layers of this land. History, art, high aesthetic value.
Now descending the glorious hill of the Achilleion Palace and moving to chora, the main town, you dwell into the mosaic that Corfu really offers. Venetian facades giving you the most interesting “καλημέρα”, arcades with little altars creating like breaks of silence in your promenade, statues, garden, pastel colours. An embrace that feels effortless but looks well-studied. In one sentence, beauty here does not feel confined to museums. It spills into ordinary life.
It is so easy to appreciate this island’s “photography”. Just as you appreciate that of a movie. You look at a neoclassical building while a scooter drives by, or you look up and the sky follows a rope of clean laundry dancing with the wind. A grand square with small gardens and statues has kids playing and running in the most carefree ways. Listening to the sound of voices over aperitivo while musicians have their own little concert in the alleys. This mix, is very Corfu.
This land is welcoming to all influences. There is no better place for an Asian Art Museum,
housed inside the Palace of St. Michael and St. George, the museum brings together thousands of works from across Asia, but the building itself already feels like part of the exhibition. Its monumental neoclassical presence, long colonnades and position at the edge of Spianada make entering it feel slightly ceremonial.

The Art Of Making An Entrance
And maybe this is where Corfu starts changing your behaviour a little bit. Because being surrounded by this kind of beauty makes effort feel appropriate. You start understanding why getting ready for dinner should sometimes take a little longer. Why walking somewhere instead of immediately calling a taxi makes sense. Why sitting down for a drink before dinner is not wasting time, but rather creating it.
As afternoon slowly turns into evening, the island becomes even more theatrical. Tables start filling, glasses appear, dresses move through narrow streets and conversations become part of the soundtrack. You might have spent the morning swimming with salty hair and no particular plan, and suddenly you find yourself sitting somewhere under an arcade, ordering another glass of wine simply because leaving would interrupt the scene.
That is another version of royalty Corfu quietly proposes. Not extravagance for extravagance’s sake, but ceremony. Giving ordinary pleasures slightly more importance than they technically deserve.
And the island constantly creates the perfect setting for it. Because as elegant as Corfu Town can become, the rest of the island makes sure things never feel overly polished. Cypress trees, olive groves, coastal roads and little beaches interrupt the sophistication with something wilder. The Ionian Sea appears between trees, behind houses, at the end of roads. A reminder that even the most beautiful palace eventually has to answer to nature.

We could say that Corfu makes refinement feel less like exclusivity and more like awareness. You do not have to stay inside a palace to understand why Sisi fell in love with the island. You only have to pay attention. Look above the restaurant signs and notice the windows. Walk through a garden slowly enough to smell it. Choose the longer road because the sea follows you there. Dress beautifully for dinner, even if dinner is only a few streets away. Have dessert. Listen to the musicians. Stay ten minutes longer.
Modern travelling often comes with an invisible pressure to maximise. More beaches, more restaurants, more saved locations, more photographs proving that everything happened. Corfu proposes the opposite. See fewer things, perhaps, but allow them to become bigger.
Let beauty interrupt your schedule. Let lunch stretch into the afternoon. Let an old building make you stop walking for no practical reason whatsoever. Because travelling like royalty is simply about having the privilege of paying attention.
Words have many different meanings. So does the Domes experience.
