Greek Gastronomy: A Conversation Shaped by Plate and Wine

In Athens — a city where old stories and new ideas live side by side — Makris Athens by Domes keeps shaping its own place in the fine-dining scene. Its newest partnership brings a fresh, honest conversation between food and wine, led by Chef Patron Petros Dimas and Master of Wine Yiannis Karakasis MW — one of just 400 Masters of Wine in the world, and only two in Greece.

Wine Heritage as a Language of Place

For Yiannis Karakasis MW, wine is a form of storytelling — a way to convey place, culture, and human intention. His work has played a defining role in elevating Greek wine globally. As founder and Managing Director of Great Greek Wines, and author of The Wines and Vineyards of Greece, Natural Wines in Greece, and The Wines of Santorini — nominated for the Andre Simon Awards — he has become one of the most respected voices in contemporary wine culture.

At Makris, he curates a focused list that highlights both Greek and international producers known for identity, consistency, and depth. Each bottle reflects terroir and character, interpreted through a modern, restrained lens.

“Our list centres on authenticity and character,” Karakasis notes. “Producers who express a strong sense of place and commitment.”

The Clarity of Makris by Domes

Under the vision of Chef Patron Petros Dimas, Makris Athens by Domes continues to pursue a style rooted in simplicity, precision, and feeling. His approach celebrates Greek ingredients — their purity, their origin, their seasonality — always expressed with balance rather than spectacle.

“Our goal is an experience of clarity, where flavour and emotion coexist,” he says. “Every dish and every glass holds the story of a place and of the people behind it.”

Together with Karakasis, this philosophy evolves into a conversation between kitchen and cellar — a dialogue of texture, aroma, and meaning. The result is not simply pairing, but a unified narrative where plate and glass echo the same story.

A New Chapter for Greek Gastronomy in Greece

The coming together of Makris Athens by Domes and Yiannis Karakasis MW is more than a partnership; it feels like the start of a new chapter in Greek gastronomy. It reflects a shift toward a cuisine that respects where it comes from while confidently stepping onto the world stage. Here, the essence of Greece isn’t treated as an idea — it’s something you can taste. It lives in the connection between dish and wine, in the people who make them, and in the way tradition and modern thinking meet at the same table.

Words have many different meanings. So does the Domes experience.
