Meet Ioannis Capodistrias Through A Museum Dedicated to His Memoirs

The Capodistrias Museum tells the story of the Corfiot Count Ioannis Capodistrias, first Governor of modern Greece. It is housed in the historical country estate of Koukouritsa, a national monument, near Evropouloi village, just 7km from Corfu Town. The most distinguished Corfiot diplomat and politician of his day (1776-1831), his name was linked with the vision and struggles for peace in early 19th century Europe and the establishment of the modern Greek State.

The museum presents an important collection of Capodistrias’ personal items, family furniture and heirlooms, giving visitors the opportunity to explore the history of Corfu and Greece through the life and legacy of the first Governor. Visitors can enjoy a free Web App which includes an audio guide (English/French/Russian/Greek), explore the temporary exhibition “John, Count Capo d’ Istria” (until November 2022), while the kids can have a playful time in the museum by using the freely available “exhibition discovery game”.

The Museum is surrounded by a lush historic garden with scenic views over the island. Visitors can explore the garden, its flora and history, by using the free garden tour Web App, they can relax at the Museum Cafe situated at the garden hilltop or come along at one of the evening cultural summer events. In 2022, the Capodistrias Museum was nominated for the European Museum of the Year Award.
