Kazania in Elounda

The Spirit of the Kazania in Crete: An Autumn Tradition

Each autumn in Crete, as the grape harvest season concludes, the island awakens to one of its most cherished traditions: the Kazania. In villages across the mountains and valleys, copper stills are lit and the first drops of raki begin to flow. Yet the Kazania is not merely about distilling a drink—it is a gathering that honors heritage, kinship, and the island’s timeless rhythm of life.

The ritual unfolds with remarkable simplicity. Families and neighbors gather around the stills, tables are filled with meze, and music drifts through the cool evening air. Laughter and conversation mix with the scent of firewood and grapes, transforming these small distilleries into spaces of joy and belonging. For Cretans, it is a season of reaffirming bonds. For visitors, it is an invitation to witness authenticity at its purest.

The Spirit of the Kazania at Domes of Elounda

A season of raki, heritage, and shared moments

Spend a few days here, and you’ll learn: every coastal path eventually winds its way to a village table. Staying at Domes Zeen Chania or Domes Noruz Chania, it feels natural to wander inland from the coast, where hillside villages still celebrate the Kazania with open doors and generous tables. A short drive replaces the sea breeze with the aroma of firewood, and suddenly you are part of an evening where time slows, music begins, and raki flows freely.

At the opposite end of the island, guests of Domes of Elounda will find the same spirit in the villages of Lassithi, where tradition and hospitality blend seamlessly—an experience as memorable as the views across Mirabello Bay.

Much like the Kazania, experiencing Crete in this season is to discover that true luxury is not only about exquisite design or comfort, but also about being part of rituals that carry the island’s soul forward, year after year—inviting every guest to share in a ritual that, like the island itself, is both timeless and unforgettable.

Words have many different meanings. So does the Domes experience.
